Sketch a Day: Day 1

63008.jpg
Something hanging out on my notepad at work from the end of June.

Almost done with my Anthropologie Inspired Capelet. Woo!

Haven’t had much of a chance to get to sew my star shirt (though to be fair, my printer ran out of black ink and I need to print out the fold over collar pattern piece. First things first, I suppose.) I also think the 6 star buttons I have won’t be enough, so off to M&J Trim I go.

Oh! I bought some bento boxes and a rice mold from Bento TV in an effort to stop spending so much money buying breakfast and lunch in the city, and to eat healthier. Totally cute! I got a blue Urara two tier, a Batman one tier and a penguin silicon mold. Of course I stumble onto Ichiban Kan last night and I bought a yellow Putifresh banana one tier bento and matching belt, and a bunny & bear egg mold. They were soooo cheap! When they come in later this week, I photograph all the pretty lunch accessories. I’m gonna have to go Chinatown this weekend and scour the shops for some cutters and molds and divider cups.

But my lunch making wasn’t nearly as cute as the bentos I’ve been looking at this week. So just imagine fried rice & lentil patties, pork & scallion pasty, banana chips & grapes for snack. In the batman bento is a salad with tons of avocado and sake vinegar dressing. Yum! I have a feeling I’m totally going to be hungry soon after eating it. ^_^

A weekend of Epic Proportions

Posted by Firenze under rambling

and epic heat. I think I got a shade darker (which isn’t much considering I’m transparent) just from walking to and from the grocery store.

I saw The Dark Knight on Friday. I liked it. There was a lot going on, for me it was a bit convoluted, but I think I’ll chalk it up to being so tired from work.  I liked the story and how it was brought together from bits and pieces of Batman graphic novel, and how the characters were so solid.

I love how Nolan has given Bruce Wayne/Bruce Wayne/Batman three separate personalities (in the comics he is Batman first and Bruce Wayne second). I love the polar opposites between a confused and answer seeking Bruce Wayne to a bold, unwavering Batman.

But the Joker comes on in, and tears that and anyone and anything in his way, apart, for the sole purpose of watching people panic as he rips their plans apart. I find the character completely frightening because of his unpredictabilty. He kills so readily, that every person in Gotham can be a victim of his. There’s some really great explosions, stunts and action scenes in the film, and I’m happy to know that they were all real and not CG.

There were only a few things I found annoying with he film. The beginning half hour has a lot of camera spins around characters that it’s dizzying. Thankfully, Nolan knocks it off for the rest of the film. Bale’s voice as Batman is too grizzly to be understandable. I disliked Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel, though she’s a fine actress and she did a great job as Rachel, she’s just not nearly as pretty as Katie Holmes.

There’s a lot of small details I missed on the first time around that Terry had to fill me in later, so I’m feeling like I need to see it again in a few weeks when the theaters aren’t so packed.

The last 4 episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender aired on Saturday, and it was a great conclusion to the series. The animation was phenomenal (so much fire!) I REALLY hope they don’t milk the series and continue with anything meaningless. I think it would be interesting to find out where Zuko’s mother has been, but really, everything else was neatly tied up and needs no epilogue. I also need to watch it again, and I’m sure Nickelodeon will be playing it everyday.

Sleep deprived, sick and over caffeinated

Posted by Firenze under art, rambling

Forgot to cross-post:bella3.jpgBeen too busy at work to continue painting. I’m happy with where it’s going, but I still need to work on harsher shadows and highlights. Right now it reminds me of 3D global lighting. Blargh. Als, orange juice after drinking coffee and eating a tomato based soup=bad idea.

Saturday Terry and I went shoe shopping (boo!) and saw Hellboy 2. It was…okay. I agree with the review on Spill saying the people were incredibly inhuman with their dialogue and actions. The 12 ferry got cancelled and we had to wait an hour for the next one and didn’t get home til 2am. I wonder wtf happened with the ferry that it was cancelled (on Wednesday Terry’s morning ferry was broken so it went very very slow, and on Thursday my morning ferry was cancelled. My train this morning was delayed and I missed the ferry because the express in front of us was having a malfuntion and we had to wait for them to clear the track to let us in. It seems like these things are breaking left and right. With the MTA flipping out about their lack of money, I wonder how reliability and safety of the trains/ferries are going to be affected)

Yesterday Misha came over for a crafting day and brought her aunt’s Singer Tiny Serger.  I think it works pretty well for it’s size and price ($50). I’ve never used one before, but we poured over the instruction manual, turned a few knobs and I was able to clean up a few edges on a knit jacket I had stopped working on. It still needs to be pieced together and have a zipper put in (groan!), but at least the inside seams will be all clean. The only complaint I had with the machine is how hard it is to thread because of its small size and how loud it is, but I think it’s a decent serger, and definitely makes me want a full size fancy one
